My friend Allyson recently traveled around Portugal with her husband (while there 3 girls stayed home with their grandparents) and they fell in love with Porto. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal (after Lisbon where my family briefly visited last January) and the city is situated along the coast in northwest Portugal. Porto, Portugal is known for its stately bridges and port wine production. Long walks along cobblestone streets, gorgeous Portuguese tile and churches, seafood and port wine, of course, made this the perfect spot for a romantic getaway (and milestone birthday celebration for her husband). Allyson generously shared her favorite spots and stunning images from her recent trip that will make you want to book a flight as soon as possible!
Wonder: Activity 1 – Walk the Dom Luis I Bridge
We explored both the top and the bottom of the bridge enjoying a romantic walk and gorgeous views of the whole city.
Adventure: Activity 2 – Cruise down the Douro river
We took a day cruise down the Douro river into the valley to see the beautiful landscapes and vineyards and take in a wine tasting which was heaven.
Navigate: Activity 3 – Explore the churches in downtown Porto
We meandered through the beautiful churches and cathedrals in downtown Porto where we saw the exquisite – and famous – painted Portuguese tiles and glorious ceilings.
Discover: Activity 4 – Have a port tonic in a rooftop bar along the Douro river
Porto is full of little wine shops that serve up glasses of excellent Portuguese vintages for little more than a euro or two. But the port – and the cities namesake – is a must. Most of the port wine cellars and rooftop bars are over the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, with beautiful views back to Porto and are incredible to sit and have a drink.
Eat: Taberna Está-se Bem
Taberna Está-se Bem is located in the Rua Reboleira district on the water in Porto. Although it is located in a very touristy part of town, this tapas bar and tavern puts a delicious spin on the everyday tapas you find in Porto – with lots of variety. The owner also owns a high-end wine house and restaurant 50 yards away called Ode. It was one of the best meals I have had in my life! Make sure to make a reservation in advance.
Rest: Apartreboleira
We stayed right on the river in an Airbnb called Apartreboleira. Our apartment had a stunning terrace with a view, it was centrally located and easy to get anywhere in the city. Parking was close and convenient too. It was also located in a tourist district, but it was very quiet and private…well, except for some seagulls outside our window on the evenings we left the windows open to enjoy the cool nights.
