Have you been on a date night since CoronaVirus struck? Date nights look a little different around here these days but they can still be done in creative ways at home. We especially love to center our date night at home around our mutual love of food and flavors.
Food is a great way to make a date more of an experience and it can be more involved or simplified — depending on your time and expertise. Serve your kids an early dinner, put them to bed and enjoy a private meal with your partner. Or, as a dear friend recommended, tell the kids that they are their own babysitters for the night and let them take care of themselves while you enjoy a date night alone simply in another room. You could even pay them a bit to make it official.
Here are five fun and creative date night ideas involving food:
1. Gift Your Partner A Foodie Box
Treat boxes are a great way to surprise your partner with something they’re not expecting and allow them to try a new food or flavor at home. During this pandemic, you’re not likely to be dining out as often as you used to (or in our case, at all). A gift box like pretzels from esprovisions.com can be a fun treat to give to your partner and on date night you can both indulge!
2. Make Cheese Fondue
Fondue is often associated with chocolate but if you’re fancying something a little more savory, then it’s worth swapping out chocolate for cheese fondue. Cheese fondue is a unique dining experience that can easily be done at home with the right equipment – like a fondue pot. We’ve even used fondue cheese packages at our local grocery store (Aldi sells a delicious one). Pair it with vegetables, bread, sliced green apples, sausage or anything that you’d like to try dipping in melted cheese!
3. Cook A Three-Course Meal Together
Cooking together is a great way to build relationships and connect with your partner and preparing a three-course meal together pushes dinner to the next level. Split the duties up, and enjoy prepping a fun meal with a glass of wine or cocktail while listening to music . It can also be a great opportunity for you to make conversation, try new foods and cooking techniques and compliment each other’s kitchen skills.
4. Create A Simple Dinner Charcuterie Board
Charcuterie boards (a glorified cheese and meat tray) are all the rage these days. We prepare them for dinner so frequently, even my 8-year-old serves them up for us from time to time. As opposed to cooking a three-course meal, this allows you to throw together a fun dinner full of flavors, quickly, and perhaps even enjoy playing a card game or watching a romantic movie together while enjoying. They pair beautifully with a bottle of wine and can be brought outside to enjoy picnic style, munched on from the kitchen counter or placed in the middle of the dining room table. We like to try new cheeses, meats, fruits, spreads, nuts, crackers, bread and more.
5. Support Your Local Restaurants with Take Out
During this pandemic, a lot of businesses are struggling. Therefore, it’s important to support your local businesses where and whenever possible and this includes takeout. Sometimes, a date night at home is made better when you don’t have to cook for yourselves. My husband and I did this a lot when our kids were really young — we would put them to bed and pick-up takeout at a favorite local spot for a luxurious date night at home. It might be worth making a list of all the take out spots you’ve been interested in buying from and then working your way through the list on a monthly basis. Most of our favorite Nashville restaurants provide take-out options — a few we especially love are City House, Henrietta Red, Answer & Miel.
