A silver lining of the current pandemic is that it’s pulling us all outside for adventures across the country and around the world. Even as the temperatures drop here in Nashville, friends and family gather outside to stay safe and explore parks and trails, farms, and orchards — and even backyards. I’ve been watching friends enjoy hiking and exploring outside in every state, but I’m excited to share some outdoor adventures in Colorado!
Our family loves to document the states and countries we’ve visited and while we have yet to take the girls to experience adventures in Colorado, I grew up enjoying the skiing and hiking of the Centennial state. I can’t wait to get my girl experiencing similar adventures in Colorado.
Colorado is a beautiful state to explore, whether you’re just passing through or are visiting as part of a longer trip — or you live amidst the mountains. As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected our 2020 travel plans and it looks like 2021 will be limited as well. Closures and health concerns mean that many of us are preferring to plan our vacation activities outside no matter where we are headed. For a few options to kickstart your vacation planning this year and beyond, you’ll want to check out these four fun ideas that explore the beauty, wildlife, and adventures in Colorado.
1 . Rocky Mountain National Park
You’ll find beautiful mountains, plenty of wildlife, and tundra wildflowers at the Rocky Mountain National Park. A favorite activity is to wander down the Trail Ridge Road, with 350+ miles to explore. Whether you’re looking for challenging or easy hikes, there are plenty of options. Those who love fishing won’t be disappointed either — you can practice fly fishing or try your hand at ice-fishing in the winter. Prefer to try horseback riding? There are plenty of activities and trails, including the Big Meadows, Lawn Lake, and East Inlet. Rocky Mountain National Park is a fantastic place for wildlife watching too. You’ll be able to spot Elk, coyotes, eagles, beavers, bighorn sheep, and more!
2. Royal Gorge Zip Lining
Looking for something super fun and also exhilarating? Head down to the Royal Gorge and try tree-top zip-lining. This extra-special zip line activity will give you a once in a lifetime experience of the canyon. You can take your pick of twenty zip line courses, whether you’re looking for a short-whizz or a three-mile adventure. If you’ve always wanted to try a zip wire, the Royal Gorge is one of the best places to try it in the U.S.
3. Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde National park lies close to the Four Corners district. It’s a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Ancestral Pueblo people once lived for 700+ years. This stunning park has preserved almost 5,000 different archaeological sites.
The park is home to approximately 200 bird species and 70 mammal species. There are also amphibians, lions, bats (you name it)! There are many cliff dwellings to explore, including the famous ‘Cliff Palace.’ The palace has 150 beautiful rooms made from mortar, wooden beams, and sandstone. For a great social distancing activity exploring a national park is a great option.
4. Backcountry Skiing
If you are a skiing fan, you certainly won’t be disappointed by the opportunities in Colorado for all ages. You’ll find many different types of terrain and lots of deep dry powder (perfect for skiing & snowboarding). Whether you’re looking for steep couloirs or technical chutes, you’ll find something for everyone. If you’re interested in backcountry skiing, you’ll need to have an excellent level of fitness. It’s more advised for experienced skiers as opposed to novices. For more information, check out Adventure Travel.
Naturally, it’s important to check travel restrictions and opening hours before planning your trip. Due to the ongoing pandemic, some activities may have more sporadic opening times, regulated or timed entrances and other mask mandates or regulations. Please protect each other by following these mandates.
