Global travel is off the cards for most people during the current climate. We’re not quite sure when things will return to normal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead. Likewise, there are ways to travel while remaining safe – such as traveling within your own country. Also, staycations are more popular than ever before and there are plenty of great places you can find nearby wherever you live, but have you considered solo travel?
As moms (and dads), we’ve been managing a lot this year. Have you ever thought about getting away for a quick solo travel trip? No one else to worry about — even just for a day. Lots of moms I talk to need to simply get out for a drive for some alone time and refresh these days.
One idea is to go and visit a different city or town for a couple of days. It is a lovely change of pace, and it is perfect for anyone that wants to travel alone. If you’re able to travel now, give solo travel some consideration. If not, put it in your planner and start thinking of where you’ll go when you can travel!
For now, let’s look at the reasons why a city trip is perfect for solo-travelers:
Plenty of solo activities to do
Cities are full of tourist attractions that are ideal if you’re traveling alone. This includes things like museums, galleries, and plenty of other activities for introverts. A solo travel city trip can be a short and lovely experience that can easily keep your schedule full — even simply walking through the city streets or greenspaces (masked of course) can provide solo meditation or relaxation. You don’t need someone else to accompany you – in fact, going to museums or galleries can be better when you’re alone. You don’t have to explain things to other people, you can stay as long or as short as you want and decide where to go without a group consensus. Dreamy right?
Cheap travel
A city trip can be a cheap or inexpensive way for you to travel and see a new place. If you want, you can literally travel there for a day. Many major cities are easily accessible via public transport in one way or another or a quick drive if a large city or interesting town is near you. Spend the day taking in the sites and enjoying the change of pace, then make your way home in the evening. It’s more than enough time to get an awesome experience, but you don’t have to spend ridiculous amounts of money planning an extensive trip. Maybe a tank of gas or a train ticket. You could even pack a lunch to eat in a city park while exploring.
You can be spontaneous
Traveling by yourself is fantastic since you can make decisions whenever you feel like it. You don’t have to consult with anyone else, stick to someone else’s schedule or corral kids. This spontaneity is enhanced when you throw city trips into the mix. Right now, you could decide to visit a city tomorrow, provided the COVID rules allow you. Even from Nashville — tomorrow, you could be wandering around a local small town like Franklin, Colombia, Chattanooga, or Bowling Green, KY and still be home in time for dinner (or after the kids are down for bed, ahem).
By contrast, going abroad, to another state, or planning longer trips with a group need to be planned in advance, most often. Even as a solo traveler, there are things you have to book that can’t always be done quickly. So, if you want to go somewhere new, a local city trip is a great option.
Safe in comparison to other options
Traveling on your own will always bring certain safety concerns to the table. However, going on a city trip can be one of the safest options for solo travelers. In a big city, you have plenty of safe hotels to stay in, and the sheer concentration of people in a city provides a sense of safety in numbers.
I love the idea of backpacking across Europe by yourself and covet friends who do it, but a quick city trip seems a bit safer at this time and also more doable.
City trips are excellent for anyone that’s traveling on their own. You’ll have so much to do, it’s an affordable experience, and you can make decisions at a moment’s notice. Again, to reiterate, don’t plan a city trip until it is 100% safe to do so and research the safety and restrictions of the city you’re planning to travel to. But, put a solo city or driving trip on the radar!
