There’s no getting away from the fact that The Great Lakes are iconic in the Northern midwest of the U.S. There are eight states that have shorelines on at least one of the Great Lakes including New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. This region of the U.S. contains 7 national parks, dozens of lakeshores, monuments, and memorials. From picturesque dunes to 22 different islands, this stunning region is home to surfer’s paradises, quiet spots, lovely beaches and tons of history.
The Great Lakes are called “Great” for a reason, they are gigantic – think of them like ‘inland seas’ complete with sandy beaches, resort towns, and the most incredible lighthouses. The region is blanketed with woodlands, orchards, and regional eateries, not to mention some pretty unique and rather quirky attractions – a day trip to the Spam Museum or a visit to the world’s biggest ball of twine, anyone?
If you’re planning a trip to The Great Lakes, you won’t be disappointed. Plus, there are so many kid-friendly activities around The Great Lakes, this spectacular region is the perfect location for a family break. (The Great Lakes would be a wonderful solo trip, couples trip, or a multi-generation family reunion too).
Bearing that in mind, what are the best things to see and do in The Great Lakes with your little ones? Read on for the ultimate guide to exploring The Great Lakes with kids on board.
Boating
Boating can make a great family day out. Across the region, you can find many companies offering boat rentals, as well as guided boat rides and lessons. Boat outfitters and marinas are prominent throughout where you can rent a sailboat, pontoon boat, or powerboat along with kayaks, paddleboards, and all necessary equipment. If you feel comfortable taking a boat out on your own as a family, then opt to explore the lakes with your own rental. If you would prefer to have a qualified guide with you, choose a guided rental instead. Boating when visiting The Great Lakes can be a great way to explore, but just make sure to be safe – life jackets are a must, and talking to the kids about water safety is also important.
Hike the trails
The Great Lakes have some incredible hiking trails winding around the region; from short walks suitable for little feet to longer and more advanced trails. (Here are my 5 Tips for Hiking with Kids) Pick up a walking map of the region and plan out some routes that will be suitable for you and your little ones. Don’t forget to make sure that you have all of the right hiking gear for exploring the Great Lakes, including hiking boots, raincoats, backpacks, water bottles, and any camping equipment you might want or need. If you’re unsure which trails to try, you can find all of the best family-friendly ones listed online.
Fishing
Another exciting way you can make more of your time visiting the area is to take the kids fishing. We’ve just started to do this more on our family trips. If you are a seasoned fishing enthusiast then you probably have everything that you need, but if you’re new to fishing then perhaps you could all learn to fish together? You will find plenty of fishing schools around the region, making learning how to fish safely and effectively easy, fun, and memorable for all the right reasons. Plus, maybe you can catch dinner!
Spend time on the Beach
Since The Great Lakes span many miles of coastline, there are tons of beautiful beach areas to use and enjoy, including Orchard Beach, Rogers City Beach, and Empire Beach, among many others. Consider spending a day relaxing on the beach — probably a favorite way of mine to relax in the region. The kids can splash in the shallows, build sandcastles and explore while you watch on….or participate in the sandcastles with them. Most beaches allow dogs too, so you can bring your four-legged friend along with you.
The Great Lakes make a perfect location for a family break. Other outdoor activities may include visiting local farmer’s markets to get the best regional produce, checking out shipwreck spots or historic lighthouses, playing a round of golf, or cross country skiing in the winter. Have you been to The Great Lakes region for a family vacation? I’d love to hear what you love about this iconic American region.
