We live in Nashville where the options for<\/span> free family fun<\/span><\/a> are plentiful, indeed, and especially during the summer months. Our family of 5 has so many awesome things going on this summer: pool, Little League tournaments, a visit with my Mom complete with <\/span>muraling<\/span><\/a> through Nashville, beach trips\u2026 but we\u2019ve only got two weeks of summer vacation under our belt and I\u2019m already getting tired! \u00a0My favorite free thing to do over the summer is to take breaks from the \u201cactivity\u201d and simply read to my kids. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, I am not suggesting you start reading aloud Dostoyevsky for an hour every day. \u00a0Start with an audiobook. What if you told your kids you are tired of listening to the same 20 pop songs on the radio and you needed a change? One of your favorite books growing up was Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren and you want to listen to it while you drive to and from camp, or the pool, or the grocery store. \u00a0Or better yet, during peak sun hours, head inside for a bowl of ice cream and listen to said audiobook<\/span> for 10 minutes at a time<\/span><\/a>\u2026 for 16 days. \u00a0Take 3 weeks; don\u2019t do it every day. If you read most days for 10 minutes your kids will remember the summer they kick-backed with Mom and ate ice cream, read Pippi Longstocking and laughed, and laughed and laughed some more. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Here in the South we have roughly 40 more days of vacation until school starts in August. \u00a0\u00a0If you read for 10 minutes a day, that\u2019s 400 minutes, or over 6 and a half hours of reading. Maybe make it a Roald Dahl themed summer and read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em> and the BFG<\/em> (7 hours, 40 minutes) or Matilda<\/em> and James and the Giant Peach<\/em> (7 hours, 35 minutes). Two of my favorites are The Twits<\/em> and Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/em> and they are on the short side. When you\u2019re done with the books, watch the movies as a family! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are so many benefits to reading with your kids, more eloquently said on <\/span>Dr. Meg Meeker\u2019s podcast Parenting Great Kids, Episode 56: Reading Aloud With Your Kids<\/span><\/a>. I\u2019m also a huge fan of <\/span>Sarah Mackenzie\u2019s Read Aloud Revival podcast<\/span><\/a>. With the right book for your family and a dedicated time to read to your kids, you can be successful! Here are some tips to help you get started:<\/span><\/p>\n

Audiobooks<\/b><\/h1>\n

I started using audiobooks when my kids were babies. I wasn\u2019t a fan of kids music and one day I found Mother Goose Rhymes on CD at my local library. \u00a0Then I used Rabbit Ears collections of folk and fairy tales. Really anything age appropriate works. These days I use my local library and the Overdrive app on my phone. \u00a0I\u2019ve used Audible (FREE) online a few times for books my library doesn\u2019t have as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Book Lists<\/b><\/h1>\n

Book lists are great – specifically for Read Aloud Chapter Books. Your local library and Children\u2019s Librarian may also be a fantastic resource for recommendations. My favorite place for finding read aloud titles online is <\/span>What Do We Do All Day<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0There is a booklist for everyone here! \u00a0But don\u2019t limit yourself to chapter books\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Picture Books<\/b><\/h1>\n

There are SO many wonderful picture books for kids ages 6 to adult. Again, here I use <\/span>What Do We Do All Day<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0I go on binges requesting books from my library. \u00a0My 10 and 8 year old devour them, and when I sit down to look at one (really, I get picture books for myself) inevitably a child comes over to peek over my shoulder and I start reading to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Read to Your Teens<\/b><\/h1>\n

I love the idea<\/span> in this article<\/span><\/a> about Read Aloud Sleepovers! \u00a0And reframing picture books as part of a teen’s library as “stress free reading” is genius. \u00a0<\/span>NPR has a great list for teens<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Follow The Great American Read<\/b><\/p>\n

My kids are watching <\/span>The Great American Read<\/span><\/a> launch episode as I write and they\u2019re asking me, \u201cCan we vote?\u201d \u00a0\u201cI\u2019m voting for Harry Potter!\u201d \u201cCan I read Lord of the Rings?\u201d \u201cWhat are you going to vote for, Mom?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Use Incentives (a.k.a. Bribery)<\/b><\/h1>\n

If your library has a summer reading program, use it! <\/span>In Nashville <\/span><\/a>you can track your time reading and earn small prizes, free visits to local museums and coupons to local restaurants. \u00a0If your library does not offer a program, make your own! Celebrate reading 5 days in a row with brownies, popcorn or popsicles. \u00a0Celebrate your efforts at the end of the summer and let the kids pick out a new or used book for their personal library. <\/span><\/p>\n

Give your kids something to do While You Read<\/b><\/h1>\n

While you read aloud, give your kids something to do – my 6-year-old really needs a mini-trampoline but uses the couch. \u00a0My daughter draws, so we keep paper and pencils handy for her to pull out as she\u2019s listening. My older son likes <\/span>Highlights Hidden Picture Books<\/span><\/a> I find at Target. \u00a0We got samples of <\/span>Paint By Sticker<\/span><\/a> books recently and my kids are enjoying them as they listen. All three of my kids go through <\/span>finger knitting<\/span><\/a> frenzies every once in a while which is awesome while listening. Put a puzzle on the floor. \u00a0Get creative, let your children move around, <\/span>it\u2019s okay and it is actually a good thing<\/span><\/a>! \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope y\u2019all will give a family read aloud a try and make it <\/span>your<\/span><\/i> next summer adventure. Read for pleasure and have fun creating a new family memory. \u00a0Mama\u2019s tired, so hit play on that audiobook and pass the ice cream!<\/span><\/p>\n
